Sask. teen accused of hacking U.S. website

SASKATOON — A teenager from a remote northern Saskatchewan community has been accused of hacking into a website based in New York.

Ryan Devin Lee, 19, of Denare Beach, Sask., has been charged with unlawful use of a computer to commit an offence, committing mischief to data, and possession of a device or instrument to commit a computer offence, according to RCMP.

In early June, a New York man who operates a family of social-networking sites laid a complaint with police, which soon made its way to the RCMP detachment in Creighton, Sask., said Const. Damon Maier. Investigators allege that a computer located in Denare Beach was crashing his New York-based commercial website.

The website was the subject of a distributed denial of service — or DDOS attack — that effectively prevented all users from connecting to it.

On June 9, officers from the Creighton RCMP detachment executed a search warrant on a residence in Denare Beach, seizing several computers as well as software.

Local Mounties were assisted by the RCMP technological crime unit as well as the Canadian Consulate in New York City, according to an RCMP statement.

There are few traces of Lee using his full name online — except for the MySpace page of his girlfriend in which they profess their love for each other. His chat ID photo shows a young man holding a camera to take a photo of himself in a mirror.

Lee is scheduled to appear Sept. 14 in Creighton provincial court.

Denare Beach is located 500 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, near the Manitoba border.
